Product Description
Copolymer of Phosphono and Carboxylic Acid (PCA) CAS 71050-62-9 Water Treatment
PCA is an advanced water treatment chemical that effectively prevents scale formation and corrosion in industrial water systems through multiple mechanisms of action.
Mechanism of Action
PCA prevents scale formation and corrosion through three primary mechanisms:
  • Chelation / Complexation - The carboxylic groups chelate calcium and magnesium ions in the water, reducing the concentration of scale-forming ions.
  • Crystal Lattice Distortion - The phosphonic groups adsorb onto the surface of growing micro-crystals, disrupting their normal growth pattern and preventing them from forming hard, adherent deposits.
  • Dispersion / Electrostatic Repulsion - The polymer disperses suspended particles, preventing them from aggregating and depositing on metal surfaces.
Quantum chemistry studies have shown that PCA's corrosion inhibition performance primarily comes from the phosphonic group, which readily donates electrons to the empty d-orbitals of iron atoms on the metal surface, forming a protective adsorption layer.

Performance Advantages
Advantage Description
Broad-Spectrum Scale Control Effective against calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, barium sulfate, strontium sulfate, and silica/silicate scales
Wide Water Quality Tolerance Performs well in high-pH, high-hardness, high-alkalinity, and high-concentration-ratio conditions
Chemical Stability Excellent thermal stability and strong resistance to chlorine oxidation
Synergistic Effects Works well in combination with other organic phosphonates, copolymers, zinc salts, and benzotriazole (BTA)
Environmentally Friendly Options Low-phosphorus formulations (<3% phosphorus content) align with green chemistry principles

Applications
Industrial Circulating Cooling Water Systems
PCA is widely used in cooling towers and recirculating cooling systems to prevent scale formation and corrosion on heat exchange surfaces. Typical dosage is 5-20 mg/L. Studies have shown that at concentrations as low as 5 mg/L, PCA achieves over 90% inhibition of calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate scales.
Oilfield Water Injection Systems
In oilfield operations, PCA is used to prevent scaling in injection wells and pipelines, as well as to reduce corrosion rates on downhole equipment and surface facilities.
Formulated Products
PCA is often used as a component in blended formulations with:
  • Organic phosphonates (ATMP, HEDP, PBTCA)
  • Other copolymers
  • Zinc salts
  • Benzotriazole (BTA)
These blends provide enhanced performance for demanding water conditions, such as high-hardness and high-alkalinity cooling water.
