A major commercial application is as a direct precursor to high-impact aroma chemicals.

Key Precursor to Furaneol: It is a critical intermediate in the industrial synthesis of 4-hydroxy-2,5-dimethyl-3(2H)-furanone (Furaneol), which imparts a strong caramelized, sweet strawberry and pineapple aroma. Its methyl (Mesifurane) is also synthesized from it.
