Chemical Description
Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA; trade name Carbomer) is a polymer with the formula (CH2-CHCO2H)n, derived from acrylic acid (CH2=CHCO2H). In water solution at neutral pH, PAA functions as an anionic polymer with side chains that acquire negative charge. This polyelectrolyte characteristic enables exceptional water absorption and swelling capabilities, forming the basis for its diverse industrial applications.
Key Properties
Exhibits rapid wetting characteristics and exceptional water absorption capacity, swelling to many times its original volume when dispersed in water.
Industrial Applications
- Cosmetics: Clear gels, hydro-alcoholic gels, lotions, creams, styling gel, facial moisturizer, sunscreen, shampoo, anti-aging treatment, eye cream, cleanser, and scrubs
- Pharmaceutical: Suspending agents, gel bases, emulsifiers, binding agents, artificial tears, and antiglaucoma treatments
- Textile & Papermaking: Thickening agent in textile printing and paper manufacturing processes
- Industrial Specialties: Printing inks, emulsion-based lubricants, polishes, waxes, paints, waterproof and oil-proof coatings
Functional Benefits
Carbomers serve as effective thickening agents that control viscosity and flow properties. They enable uniform distribution and suspension of insoluble solids in liquid formulations while preventing oil and liquid separation. Their unique water absorption capacity allows swelling up to 1000 times original volume, creating stable colloidal systems ideal for gel-based products.
Specialized Uses
In pharmaceutical applications, Carbomer 974P serves as the primary non-aqueous component in BufferGel formulation, functioning as a buffering agent, microbicide, and spermicide for vaginal applications providing protection against HIV and sexually transmitted diseases.
