Physical and Chemical Properties
Sodium bromide appears as colorless cubic crystals or white granular powder at room temperature, belonging to the equiaxed crystal system. It is odorless with a slightly bitter taste and exhibits high toxicity.
  • Absorbs moisture and clumps in air but does not deliquesce
  • Slightly soluble in alcohol, easily soluble in water (121g/100ml at 100°C)
  • Aqueous solution is neutral and conductive
  • Anhydrous crystals precipitate at 51°C; dihydrate forms below 51°C
  • Bromide ions can be replaced by fluorine and chlorine
  • Oxidized to free bromine under acidic conditions with oxygen
  • Reacts with dilute sulfuric acid to generate hydrogen bromide
Chemical Reactions
Concentrated sulfuric acid cannot be used with sodium bromide due to its strong oxidizing properties, which oxidize bromide to elemental bromine, releasing reddish-brown gas. Hydrogen bromide production requires concentrated phosphoric acid with sodium bromide via solid heating.
Medical Applications
Bromide ions enhance the inhibitory process of the cerebral cortex and promote concentration. Medically used as a sedative, hypnotic, or anticonvulsant.
Safety Notice: Swallowing or inhaling this compound may cause damage to the central nervous system, brain, and eyes, as well as irritating reactions to skin, eyes, and respiratory tract.
Industrial Applications
  • Raw material for preparing film photosensitive liquid
  • Sedative in medical applications
  • Brominating agent in printing and dyeing industry
  • Synthesis of fragrances and other chemicals
